Who are your clients? Major medical and health care publishers, multimedia producers, advertising firms, pharmaceutical companies and attorneys. A partial list includes: Benjamin Cummings Publishers, McGraw Hill, Addison Wesley Longman, Johnson & Johnson, Carter Wallace Inc., Abbott Laboratories, and Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.

 

How do you charge for your work? Prices are based on the complexity of the subject matter (i.e. the amount of time spent on research and rendering), the extent of use of the final product, and the time frame for completion. What is your educational background?I received a Masters of Science Degree in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia This multidisciplinary program includes both medical school and graduate level illustration courses. The medical curriculum includes: Human Gross Anatomy (with complete laboratory dissection) Embryology, Pathology, Histology, Neural Anatomy and Neurology. A year of attendance in the Operating Room for surgical observation was required. The illustration program includes: Surgical Illustration Techniques, Medical Photography, Prosthetics, Model Making and Exhibit Design. Acceptance into a graduate Medical Illustration program is extremely competitive, only 5 Medical Schools accept fewer than a dozen students each year.

 

What kind of art training do you have? I received traditional fine art training (painting, figure drawing, sculpture) from the University of Florida and the New York Academy of Art. I have a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biological Illustration from the University of Florida and of course the specialized training in medical art
described above.

 

How did you become a Board Certified Medical Illustrator? I received professional certification by the Association of Medical Illustrators by successfully completing an exam which consisted of questions, illustrations and a review of my portfolio.
